Have you ever experienced to be at one place, eating and drinking more than 6 hours and not being bored at all?

In Goce, the oldest Slovenian village and cultural monument, situated above Vipava valley there is a family household, running by Davorin Mesesnel. Amazed by secret narrow streets, picturesque church and more than 250 years old preserved stone houses, we walked through village to the Cejkotova home.

This amazing home of Mesesnel family has been entirely renovated into tasty furnished domestic guesthouse where all home made meals are prepared and served by Mesesnel family. 6  course slow food menu is accompanied by delicious wines, starting by the specialty of the house – sparkling wine.  While eating different home made karst specialties, we were invited to their fairy-ambiental wine cellar, decorated with candles and surrounded by barrels.

Davorin told us that village Goce is unique also for their specially structured wine cellars with vaulted ceilings. This village has 75 wine cellars constructed in identical way as in the one we were tasting the wine. During lunch and wine tasting we were trying sparkling wine, Rebula, Pinela, Malvazija 2005 and 2006, Cabernet Sauvignon and later some predicate wines.

Hours were running fast and we approached to evening hours and special dessert which was waiting for us. Delicious cake and struklji (dumplings) accompanied by sweet blended combination of Cabernet Sauvignon and cognac amazed us again by their innovative approach of cooking. It was already dark when Davorin invited us to a second wine cellar where we tasted pure cognac which has been more than perfect finish of best lunch-dinner in my life.

Slovenian wine regions

Slovenia is divided into 3 big wine regions, its with its own climate and other particularity.

On the West and Southwest of Slovenia there is a Primorska wine region with sub-Mediterranean climate.  The region is is divided into 3 different sub-regions:  Goriska brda (Goriska hills), similar to Italian Tuscany, Kras (Karst) and Istria with coast by the Slovenian Adriatic sea. Wines of Primorska region are generally stronger but with a subtler bouquet. They tend to be more dry in comparison with other Slovenian wine regions, with moderate acids and very rich in minerals. Primorska region is the only Slovenian region where red wines comprise 50% of the production. In Podravje and Posavje wine region white wines prevail.

In the North-Eastern Slovenia there is Podravje winegrowing region with continental climate, bordering with Hungary. It is the largest wine producing area and subdivided into seven wine-growing areas. The Podravje wine region tend to be in Slovenia one of most prestigious wine regions. Its particularity is the late harvest and other predicate wines. Here, German influence is quite strong. Variety of white grapes, cultivated in the Podravje region  is among best selection to produce high-quality white wines. Their bouquet are generally more aromatic, sweeter, and stronger.

South-Eastern Slovenia consists of Posavje region with strong French influence in the local viticulture; therefore Posavje is primarily known for its blended wines. Local growers from Posavje has been maturing their wines in small private cellars, called zidanice, typical only for this Slovenian wine region. Climatic conditions in Posavje region allow the production of other excellent wines, as well. Most famous wine from this region is cvicek, the blend of white and red wine. Besides Italian Chianti, cvicek is the only wine in the world labeled as a variety of wine even though it is blended.
